“The race was pretty uneventful for the most part. The pack went like crazy through the dirt section, shedding a few riders each lap due to pinch flats and other mechanical mishaps, but the rest of the course was pretty tame. The occasional break would go off the front, get about a 15 second gap, then immediately get reeled back in. I spent a lot of time at the front, working with a few other guys to keep the breaks in check… and half-way through the last lap finally figured I should get off the front and save some energy. (Dom had to come get me off the front at one point, inquiring what the hell I was doing wasting energy like that). So it seemed evident the race was going to be decided through the last dirt section, or a mass sprint at the finish.

I went into the final dirt section in good position, came out with the lead guys, but we were all pretty winded. There was some talk of additional attacks, but it is still a ways to the finish, and everyone was pretty well rested behind us (since no one had been doing any work for a majority of the race). I kept near the front of the first few rollers, then Berkley Bicycle Club got to the front and slowed the pace to around 20 mph. Everyone was eyeing everyone else… the finish is up two little stair-steps.. the final climb being around 150 meters long. No one wanted to push the pace since they wouldn’t have anything left for the finish.

I was around a dozen riders back, just biding my time. I guessed someone would try an early attack around 1000m to go… and I planned to follow the surge, wait for the road to open up at 200… and then leap-frog around people as they blew up from going to early. Well, the attack came at 800m, the surge was pretty intense, but I stayed in it… the road opened up at 200m and everyone went. I felt it was still a little early, so I grabbed a fast wheel from a DBC rider (knew this guy had a good uphill sprint), and followed him to about 125m… He started to fade, so I came around and sprinted up the left side of the road passing everyone. Crossed the line in first place, completely spent and just rolled on to recovery.”
