This circuit race is really fun. I like the course because it’s always up or down and has a cool little section that goes through the small copper town square with enough corners to string out the field. It was a fast race and the Oregon elite team kept attacking left and right.
One good break got away but they weren’t getting far and I knew it wouldn’t take much to get them back. Sure enough just before the last lap they got caught. Before the turn around I found Josh and told him I was going to follow him to the end. Josh did a great job of surfing to the front of the group and we were in great position at 1k to go. Unfortunately a Marc-Pro rider jumped and no one was chasing. So, There was Josh, me and 2 marc pro guys behind me. Not good. Only one option and so Josh started the lead-out at 800 meters to go. He was literally out of the saddle until 200 meters to go.
I heard guys behind me going and so I went. However, I went to the left because the rider (webcor) on my left was closest but the wind was coming from the left so the marc pro guys on the right came by. I came to the line at the same time as the webcor guy for a photo finish. The officials gave him 3rd and me 4th. The officials always give the benefit to the rider closest to the camera because the angle always makes the closest rider appear to be the winner. I’ve always known this so nothing to be worried about. They picked the cat. 2’s separately so I was the 1st of cat. 2 riders and that gave me a couple upgrade points! A big thanks to Josh for sacrificing himself in the circuit race. We all know he can win sprints and I can’t so for him to lead me out is pretty cool. Of course it would’ve been nice to win but with Josh and I against a few teams I’m happy with 4th and thankful that he put me in position to get upgrade points.
A special thank you to Ben and Alicia. It was a life saver to have you in the feed-zone. Thank you for giving us your day! I do not know how I would’ve made it back to the car alive.
